I'm covered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield Federal Employee Vision Insurance. It's managed and administered by Davis Vision, Inc. So I went for an eye exam at VisionWorks, which is owned by Davis, and it is an in-network provider.

Rather than ordering lenses in-store, I saw that the BlueVision website allows you to order lenses online, and I figured I might get more bang for my $130 bucks of insurance coverage. I looked at the Davis contact lenses site, and ended up purchasing from VisionWorks' website.

So I was pretty shocked to find out that FEPBlue doesn't reimburse costs paid out of pocket for online purchases, even if those purchases are made from the FEPBlue's administrator's online stores, whether it be VisionWorks or Davis. A point that is not at all clear from the plan brochure or the details of the plan is that ALL online retailers, including the FEPBlue plan adminstrator's online retail site, are out of network providers.

That FEPBlue (as administered by Davis Vision) doesn't accept claims for purchases made from Davis Vision's online stores is unconscionable, especially considering that the FEPBlue explanation of benefits is fuzzy at best, and the FEPBlue benefits website has a link to Davis Vision for purchasing contact lenses, which site says that costs can be reimbursed through your insurance carrier.

Reason of review: Not as described/ advertised.

Location: Hyattsville, Maryland

That should be illegal. You pay for the insurance.
